Product Description Four mysteries involving Detective Inspector Lynley, eighth Earl of Asherton, and his partner, Sergeant Barbara Havers, from the working class.
Amazon.com IThe Inspector Lynley Mysteries 2/I finds the mismatched police detectives from Elizabeth George's novels somewhat more harmonious than in their previous quartet of BBC/PBS dramas. While aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley (Nathaniel Parker) and his working class, protégée-partner Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers (Sharon Small) maintain a shaky trust, they develop a firm regard and respect for one another, even making small inroads into each other's personal lives. Not that romance is in the air: One can spot the occasional wistful look on their faces, but the emerging intimacy between Lynley and Havers has more to do with sharing tough times in the trenches of murder investigations. p IPlaying for the Ashes/I concerns the killing of a respected cricket star and the strange constellation of suspects directly or indirectly connected to him, including an estranged wife, an angry lover, a maternal philanthropist and her streetwalker daughter, an untrustworthy agent, and a network of animal-liberation activists. Lynley and Havers find, not surprisingly, that looking into a high-profile murder is a slow and hazardous venture; all the more so in IIn the Presence of the Enemy/I, a tense thriller about a kidnapped girl whose abductor demands that a powerful newspaper editor publicly confess he is the child's secret father. While Lynley searches for clues in London, Havers teams with an eager detective in a small town and is instantly uneasy about the latter's emotionally unbalanced mother and girlfriend. IA Suitable Vengeance/I is set deep within the intrigues of Lynley's wealthy family. Havers shows up as a guest at her partner's Cornwall estate to help celebrate Lynley's wedding engagement, but is soon navigating old grudges between family members when Lynley's drug-addicted brother becomes a suspect in the death of a shopkeeper. Finally, IDeception on His Mind/I strains Lynley and Havers's relationship a bit when the latter's investigation of the murder of a Pakistani man is called into question by an old chum. A harrowing climax leaves enough ethical and narrative ambiguity to make one yearn for more in the Lynley-Havers series. I--Tom Keogh/I

Good Watching May 6, 2010 Julia Brayne (Chicago, USA) The Inspector Lynley Series is extremely well done. Elizabeth George writes great characters and this translates into good drama on the screen. Nathaniel Parker plays the moody Detective Inspector Lynley true to character. Unlike the book, where his sidekick, Detective Sergeant, Barbara Havers is an unattractive woman, Sharon Small is beautiful but keeps to character in every other way. Each episode is fresh and different and I have watched them all several times so these dvd's were a good addition to my murder mystery library.
Another series hit! Intelligent dialogue and scenic vistas. March 4, 2010 UniversityDoc (USA) I love the series and truly enjoyed every episode, which is why I ordered the entire series. I highly recommend the series for any fan of mysteries, especially British ones. Intelligent dialogue, scenic locations and the developing respect and admiration between the two lead characters make this a show worth viewing.
br /The four episodes contain a mix of darkness and wry humor.
br /Series 2 does an excellent job of continuing where Series 1 ended. It's been said that the book series author wasn't particularly pleased with the casting Sharon Small. I haven't read the books yet, but I find Small to have been an excellent choice.
br /Its nice to see that the British are just as conniving, crooked, selfless and rotten as their friends across the pond, more so in all the episodes of the series.
Excellent second series! October 17, 2009 Calypso007 (NYC, NY) I really enjoy this series of Inspector Lynley. It is actually quite a bit better than the first, as the characters have developed more, and are better friends too. The cases are grim, but gripping, and the acting as well as the guest stars are superb This is one of my favorite team of detectives! And anyone who enjoys the Midsomer Murders, or Inspecftor Lewis will probably spend quite a lot of time with Lynley and Havers soon:)
From least favorite to most! April 30, 2009 Smeddley Imagine my surprise when I started watching this season and my least favorite character from the books (Havers) becomes my most favorite character in the series! Again, I can't stress how different the show is from the books (for me, at least). And even though there is some background on their personal lives, each mystery is fairly self-contained. You could watch a single show and still enjoy the central story, even if you knew nothing about the background of the main characters.

br /This puts it high on my list of 'good mystery shows', up there with 'Midsomer Murders', 'Rosemary Thyme', and 'Hamish MacBeth'. If you're a fan of British mysteries, check this series out!
