Product Description A YOUNG MAN COMFORTS HIS OLDER BROTHER'S WIFE AND CHILDREN AFTER HE GOES MISSING IN AFGHANISTAN.
Amazon.com Screenwriter David Benioff (emThe 25th Hour/em) didn't have to do much to relocate emBrothers/em from Denmark to America. The story remains the same: Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) loves his family, but he's equally devoted to his career. Just as his ne'er-do-well brother, Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), exits prison, where he did time for robbery, the Marines deploy Sam to Afghanistan. Tommy starts looking in on his wary sister-in-law, Grace (Natalie Portman), but then Sam's helicopter crashes in the mountains, and the military informs Grace that her husband has died. Unbeknownst to the Cahill clan, the Taliban has taken Sam hostage and tortures him to elicit information. Sam resists, but his colleague caves, leading to an unthinkable act. Back in New Mexico, Grace and Tommy grow closer, stopping just short of a full-blown affair (in Susanne Bier's original, they take the plunge). Even Tommy's disapproving Vietnam vet father, Hank (Sam Shepard), sees his son in a new light after Tommy renovates Grace's kitchen. But when Sam is rescued by his company, he returns a broken man and is convinced that his wife has fallen in love with his brother. Even his daughters are afraid of him (Bailee Madison impresses as the eldest). As in Bier's film, Jim Sheridan (emIn America/em) elevates redemption and forgiveness over tragedy and loss, and his well-meaning remake gets off to a solid start, but it loses steam by the end. emBrothers/em offers a compelling scenario, but the telling is too overstated to capture the full heartbreak of the situation. em--Kathleen C. horrible July 23, 2010 Rene S. Hoepelman Jr. (Cary, NC) The worse movie Ive seen in a while. The casting was completely wrong, there was absolutly no chemistry between any of the actors. The only believable character in the whole movie was the father in law.

br /Toby Maguire; a Captain in the Military?? oh please, He looked like a 18 year old boot camp recruit and acted like it. The movie dragged on and on and on but rushed on other parts and that was due to very bad editing. This was probably a good book but certainly did not play well on camera.

A gripping emotional picture. July 22, 2010 dellamaesmith This was a touching and emotional picture. This movie made you think of the effects of war on the veterans and their families.
bull July 20, 2010 M. Edgar (KCMO) If it were not for the completely bogus military portions of this movie, maybe it would have been good. I took the dvd out when the Cpt bludgeoned his soldier to death to save himself. Bull.

br /The body of these two were not recovered, so they would not have been listed as K.I.A. in the first place. Just because of situations like this and the fact that in todays world, that helicopter crash site would have been found and the bodies recovered.

br /I can't recommend this movie at all and I will think long and hard before I ever watch Toby Mcquire or Jake Gyllinhaal again in a movie.
A++ July 4, 2010 adiadv (West Milton, OH USA) This movie was incredible, and it's now on my list of A++ movies. I watched it solely based on reviews and now I understand why it got such a high rating.

br /Tobey Maquire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, Sam Shepard ... the list would be to long to name all of the actors that outdid themselves with solid and convincing performances.

br /It's a serious and heartwrenching story that (thankfully) sheds light on the trauma that so many soldiers endure while defending their country. I've heard firsthand accounts from veterans describing their experiences, and this film brings home the fact that war is a devastating, life-altering event for both the victims and the participants.
Emotional heartbreaking July 4, 2010 Stephanie in NJ (New Jersey) Brothers was a very emotional movie but it's not so much a war movie but an intimate look at one family. Those expecting the normal blood gore war movie may not get what they are looking for. I thought the acting was wonderful. I've never been a big fan of Tobey Maguire's but this was a side of him that I have not seen I was happy to see him go to a character that is not the norm for him. I especially was moved by the acting of the older daughter. The emotion you see on her face for such a little girl was amazing.

br /I've read some of the past reviews mentioning PTSD how this movie is unreal or anti-military. For anyone that bothered to watch the Special Features on the DVD, you will know this was originally a Danish movie that was remade in America. Second, even if you know someone who has suffered PTSD, doesn't mean you are an expert. As with any form of mental illness there are varying degrees. This wasn't some guy coming home from the war who was a little messed up in the head from watching people die. This was a man who suffered a traumatizing crash, was held as a POW, tortured, starved, etc. Every person handles these situations differently. It's also been proved that people who suffer head trauma can suffer from worse cases. Since this Marine was in a crash it could very well be he suffered a hard hit to the head. There are cases of soldiers that come home kill loved ones. These are the extreme cases, like in this movie, the cases that are very few but can happen. This movie helps to show you more then just the blood gore part of war, it shows what can happen to our soldiers when they come home if we don't take care of them. If we expect them to "be a man" brush themselves off go back to their lives as if nothing happened. The least we owe them is to make sure they are ok when they come home. Is that anti-American? I sure as hell hope not.
